    Didn't Bess die in Italy? Or at least she lived there for many years as Dowager.

  2. Haha, now that would have been a story! Although the kidnapping of Lady Strathmore was no laughing matter...however brilliant a story now.

    Bess did die in Italy, and strangely enough, Eliza Courntey was at her side on her deathbed. When Lady S wrote this it was around the time Bess was Charlotte's "governess." I think you can just hear the tone of Lady S's voice when you read it.
