Yay or Nay? Comtesse de Beaufort

Who could argue with a purple dress?  Not I for sure, and barely anyone questioned Princess Victoire's choice of dress, earning her a Yay.  All this talk of winter and snow puts me in a mood for a more timely ensemble.

Louis Michel van Loo paints the Comtesse de Beaufort (ca.1760) in iridescent white and royal blue.  Yay or Nay?

  1. I say yay. I love the velvet cape (or overwrap?), and I think she looks very elegant. I shudder to think that her waist is actually cinched as small as it looks, though.

  2. I don't like it. I don't know why, but...Nay

  3. Very 'Virgin Mary', a little simple but overall a nice look so I say Yay.

  7. Yay! The effect of that open jacket with her narrow white bodice underneath is very come hither. ;)

  8. Yay!

But I got a little puzzled... Was she a Bourbon? If she was not it would be rather unpolished to wear that dress in white and blue...

  9. Yay! Simply lovely. This proves you don't need a mountain of lace and a towering wig to look fashionable and luxurious.

  11. Her sleeves look so big and loose, I think they'd drive me crazy, so...nay. The dress is all right, but not great.

  14. yay for the simple elegance but nay for the painter drawing her waist smaller than is humanly possible and thus making her a bubblehead.

  15. Yay! I love how the hard structure of the bodice is countered with the flow of the jacket. Its Beautiful, as well as the blue!

  16. Yay for the dress- love the blue wrap. Nay for the waist. Was she photoshopped? Did she have 4 ribs removed? Can we feed her?

  17. Yay, simple, understated elegance. The waist however is on the disturbing side.

  18. I love it. Very rich, flowing and looks easy to wear. The waist in the painting is tiny, and at first glance I automatically thought "stomacher". Either way, Yay. I'd wear it.
